9:00 AM (EST)

Speaker: ANDREW SEKELA - Special Agent, FBI

Topic: Economic Espionage & Russian Cyber Threats

Economic espionage represents one of the greatest threats our businesses face. The presentation describes how economic espionage occurs and what precautions your company can put in place. It details various techniques adversaries use to steal intellectual property, who those adversaries are, the types of information they seek, the consequences of IP theft, and protection strategies your company can and should implement. The presentation also addresses appropriate protocols when dealing with visitors (both foreign and domestic). Finally, it gives several case examples of IP theft.

There has been a significant increase in the number of ransomware attacks since the pandemic started. Ransomware actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated in terms of how they carry out their attacks. This presentation discusses recent Cyber threat events related to Russia.

11:00 AM (EST)

Speaker: Ken Dieffenbach - Board of Regent Emeritus

Topic: Trillions of Dollars = Trillions of Risk

In fiscal year 2018, which ended October 31, 2018, the federal government disbursed over $757 billion dollars via 487,448 grant awards for healthcare, transportation, education, research, and other important projects. In response to the pandemic, in fiscal year 2021 federal grants ballooned to over $1.3 trillion dollars. Overall pandemic-related spending, including grants, is approaching $5 trillion dollars. Additionally, the recently passed infrastructure bill will provide hundreds of billions in new spending—much of which will be accomplished via grants. In this session we'll review the basics of how federal grants work, the typical and newly emerging grant fraud risks, and practical steps fraud examiners, auditors, and others can take to assess the grant fraud landscape, identify fraud red flags, and help prevent, detect and tackle grant fraud issues.
